"I want to book an incense-making experience in Fukuoka, but I can't decide between the incense stick course and the fragrance sachet course" — this is one of the most common questions we receive at TSUTSUMU before a visit.
The short answer: both courses use the same six natural fragrances, and both cost the same ¥3,500 (incl. tax). The differences are the final form, how you enjoy it, and how easily it travels.
In this guide, the TSUTSUMU team — a Fukuoka/Hakata incense-making workshop — walks you through the two courses from the perspective of the people who blend them every day.
The Incense Stick Course
You leave with about ten handcrafted incense sticks, stored in a wooden box. Once lit, each stick quietly fills a room with fragrance for ten to fifteen minutes.
Who it suits:
- Those who want to carve out quiet moments at home
- Those who want fragrance as part of a daily ritual
- Those giving an elegant gift (wooden box + optional engraving)
Typical scenes: a single stick to start the morning, an evening reading companion, a breath of calm before yoga or meditation — a way to place small pauses into a busy day in Fukuoka.

The Fragrance Sachet Course
You leave with a small washi-paper sachet filled with your own blend of the six fragrances. No flame — just place it or hang it, and the scent diffuses naturally.
Who it suits:
- Those who want to scent a closet, drawer, or car
- Those in homes where open flame is impractical (apartments, children, pets)
- Those who want to carry it on travels
- Those who want an easy, lightweight gift
Typical scenes: tucked inside a bag, slipped into a drawer to gently perfume clothing, placed at the entryway to shape the first impression of the home — a way to add quiet quality to the small spaces closest to you.

Three Ways to Decide
1. Can you use an open flame?
Incense sticks need a ventilated space. If you have small children or pets, or if open flame is inconvenient, the sachet is the safer choice.
2. What space do you want to scent?
Incense sticks fill an entire room; sachets scent a small personal space. If you want to perfume your home in Fukuoka, sticks. If you want a scent while walking the streets of Hakata, a sachet.
3. Is it a gift, or for yourself?
For gifts, think about the recipient's life. People who already burn incense will love the sticks; active people who move often will prefer the sachet. When in doubt, a sachet suits anyone.
Both Courses Use the Same Six Natural Fragrances
The heart of a TSUTSUMU experience is free blending from our six natural fragrances, regardless of which course you choose:
- Lemongrass: bright, citrusy, herbaceous — clean and optimistic
- Osmanthus (kinmokusei): a sweet floral carrying the memory of Japanese autumn
- Vanilla: warm, universally loved comfort
- Pepper: spicy and individual, adding adult depth
- Mint: cool, crisp, clarifying
- Rosemary: herbal and intellectual — the Western tradition of focus and memory
Rather than assuming sticks are Japanese and sachets are cute, TSUTSUMU invites you to build one single expression from the same palette — that is the essence of the experience.
Which Should a First-Timer Choose?
Our answer: if you're unsure, start with the sachet course.
- No flame means no restrictions on when or where
- A pure introduction to enjoying scent alone
- Compact — easy to take home as a memento of Fukuoka
That said, if you want to build a daily ritual of resetting your space, the stick course is more rewarding. If you're torn, write "would like to discuss" in the booking notes and our staff will guide you on the day.
How to Enjoy Both in One Visit
Here's a tip: two people can choose different courses in a single visit. One makes sticks, the other sachets — then swap a portion of your work to enjoy both forms. A favorite approach for couples, families, and friends.
