Long Autumn Nights: An Incense Stick Beside Your Book — Blending Scents for Focus and Rest in Hakata

The nights are getting longer in Fukuoka. At TSUTSUMU, our incense studio about ten minutes on foot from Hakata Station, this is the season when guests start telling us they want a scent for reading at home. This autumn, why not keep a stick you blended yourself beside the book you are turning the pages of?

Long autumn nights are when books and incense go best together

In Japan, the weeks after the autumn equinox — when the nights suddenly stretch out — have their own name: aki no yonaga, the long nights of autumn. In Fukuoka the sun sets noticeably earlier from late September, and a quiet block of time opens up after dinner.

Japan's national Reading Week starts on 27 October. People have burned scent beside an open book for centuries, because scent does one thing very well: it changes the air of a place. Lighting incense to read by is a little like drawing a boundary around your desk.

A night for focus and a night before sleep call for different scents

There are two kinds of reading night. The one where you read to work or study, and the one where you turn pages slowly before turning off the light. At TSUTSUMU you choose one of two base fragrances (sandalwood or frankincense) and layer any of five mix fragrances (lemongrass, benzoin, osmanthus, honeysuckle, cinnamon). You decide the blend according to how you plan to read tonight.

For a night of focus: build on frankincense

  • Frankincense — a clear resin note. Your breathing deepens and your attention settles on the one book in front of you
  • Lemongrass — a pinch of this grassy note sharpens the edges. For nights when you need to wake your head up
  • Cinnamon — a very small amount tightens the whole blend. The trick is not to add too much

For the night before sleep: build on sandalwood

  • Sandalwood — the calm, woody scent burned in Japanese temples for 1,300 years. It carries you quietly from the last page to lights-out
  • Benzoin — soft and vanilla-like. Its Japanese name means the breath comes to rest
  • Honeysuckle — a gentle floral sweetness that makes the last stick of the day a little kinder

If you cannot decide, smell the jars one by one in the studio. Your body usually answers before you do: this one is a morning scent, this one is a night scent.

One stick burns for about as long as a short story

An incense stick burns for roughly 20 to 30 minutes — about the length of a short story, or a chapter of a novel. Decide to read until this stick goes out, and your hand reaches for your phone less often. Let the scent, not the clock, mark out your reading time.

Made in 60 minutes, ready to burn tonight

Your sticks come home with you the same day, in a wooden box

The workshop takes about 60 minutes. You choose your fragrances, blend them in a mortar, shape the paste into sticks and place them in a wooden box, all on the spot. Your incense goes home with you the same day, so you can light it that night in your Fukuoka hotel room or back home. Engraving on the wooden box is available for +¥500; some guests mark the date, or their own name, as a keepsake of the reading season.

Three small rules for burning incense while you read

  • Never leave a lit stick unattended, and set the holder on a stable surface away from books and paper
  • A faint scent is enough. Burn it in a corner of the room so it reaches you from a distance
  • When you finish, open a window a little. A soft trace of the scent will still be there in the morning
