An Autumn Date in Hakata: Sixty Minutes of Making a Scent Together

Autumn is the best season to be outside in Fukuoka. The heat finally lets go, and you can walk around Hakata in the middle of the day again. But once you have walked, had coffee and eaten — when it is time to sit down and actually do something together — the options thin out fast.

You can walk all day. It is the rest that is hard to plan

From late September through November, Hakata is at its most comfortable. Walking costs you nothing, so the day fills up easily.

And yet. A film means sitting side by side without speaking. Shopping splits you up. The gap where you say we should do one more thing is surprisingly hard to fill.

Sixty minutes with your hands busy and your faces turned towards each other changes the shape of the whole day.

Two ways to fit it in

1. Early afternoon (around 13:00–15:00)

Walk in the morning, then sit down at the hour you would otherwise start to fade. Sixty minutes later you step back out with the light still up, and the evening still ahead of you.

2. Late afternoon (16:00–17:00)

Sunset comes earlier every week from here. By November it is dark in Hakata not long after five.

Our last entry is 17:00. Take that slot and you walk out into a city that has turned to night while you were working, a wooden box in your hand, dinner still to come. This is the one we would pick.

Fragrances that suit an autumn pair

The natural fragrance materials available at TSUTSUMU
One of two base notes, plus any combination of the five mix notes

You choose one of two base fragrances, then layer on as many of the five mix fragrances as you like.

  • Osmanthus — the small orange flower that scents Japanese streets from late September into early October. For a few weeks, what you make matches the air outside
  • Cinnamon — a single pinch raises the temperature of the whole blend. Nothing suits a cooling season better
  • Sandalwood — start here if you cannot decide. Deep, settled, unmistakably Japanese incense
  • Frankincense — a clear resin note, for a pair who would rather keep the sweetness down

Choose different bases and you will end up with two completely different sticks, made side by side from the same jars. That never stops being interesting.

Hands busy, conversation different

You are not sitting there wondering what to talk about. You are talking about what is in front of you.

What did you put in that one? Is it too sweet? People choose in ways that say something about them, and couples who have been together for years still find something new here.

Let me smell yours.

If that sentence comes up several times in sixty minutes, the date went well.

The part that happens afterwards

Engraving on the box is available for +¥500

Your incense comes home with you the same day, in a wooden box.

Then, as the season closes in and you spend more evenings indoors, you burn it one stick at a time. Scent binds to memory more tightly than almost anything else. On some winter evening months from now, the afternoon you spent walking around Hakata will come back whole.

Engraving on the box costs +¥500. Couples usually ask for the date.

Rain or cold, it does not matter

All sixty minutes happen indoors. Autumn weather in Hakata can turn on you, but this part of the plan stays put.
